Originally hailing from south Louisiana, Rachel Toups’ music operates as a vivid elegy to a childhood roaming the wooded floodplains of the Mississippi river delta. Her harplike guitars and honeyed singing walk us through a memory-scape of disappearing wetlands. Toups has created a cult-like following in California, and after much anticipation, released her debut album, Sundog, on independent ambient label Peconic Records in 2019. Technically proficient and artistically daring, Sundog is a captivating mix of soothing and creepy, easy and complicated. She resides in Los Angeles when not working as an outdoor educator in the Rocky Mountains.
